First Day of the Summer Research Program
Hi Kelly,
Welcome to your participation in this summer research program. It is great you have done the induction with Mary Ann yesterday. The following descriptions were to document what we had a chat about today.
Environment
I have brought you around the Building 84A, including level 7 (Jodie's office, Sylvia's office, and photocopier room), level 8 (another photocopier room and hot water system), and level 3 (kitchen and stationery supply room). I also showed you the emergency evacuation assemble area (around great court) and security phone number (53333).Research
As for research, I mentioned there will be 2 stages for your project: one is to review the differentiation between activity and participation, and the other one is to link the participation measure with the ICF nine chapters. I gave you two relevant papers for the first-stage research (they have been also placed in the shared Dropbox). Your task for this Week 1 is to read the papers and try to understand the participation definitions for children as well as what we are going to do the review in a similar way. I also showed you briefly how we may do in the second-stage research in terms of the concept. The details will be delivered when you are more familiar with the process. The plan is to complete the first stage BEFORE Christmas and second stage BEFORE your scholarship is ended.Workload
We had a chat about workload that you can have one day off flexibly in each week. You need to let me know which day you will off on Monday of that week or before Friday of that previous week if you want to take Monday off. For each day you are working, a flexible working hour is up for choice, but usually have to achieve the length of 7 hours (excluding lunch break).Computer and Communication
I have set up a computer for you to work on over the following 10 weeks. We also set up the research blog on this site and a shared working folder on Dropbox. The important thing is to WRITE THE RESEARCH DIARY before you finish a day of work. So we can track your progress and enhance better communication.Upcoming Meeting
You will have a meeting with Jodie 9:30am on 21 November (in Jodie's office) and meet with Jodie again 10:30am on 5th December (same place). We may set up regular meeting with you. And if you wanna to meet me or Syvlia/Jodie, please let me know so that we can arrange it.Any questions?
WELCOME to the research team!! from WILL

Just testing...
Hi Will,
This is an update on what I have done so far since beginning the research program with you.
MONDAY 19th NOVEMBER
This was my first day as part of the program, and I met Mary Ann for my induction. She provided me with the OH&S Induction checklist to fill out and inducted me electronically into the program. I then met with you and some of the other members of the research group for lunch, which I very much enjoyed. It was great to meet people and hear their stories of what research they have been involved with and what they plan to do in the future.
WEDNESDAY 21st NOVEMBER
I met with Jodie at 9:30 this morning, and she explained to me some of the things I will be doing with her, such as phone interviews about report-writing and possibly referencing for the new book she is writing.
Jodie then took me to meet two GEMS students who explained to me the process they are currently using to write paediatric reports at UQ. They showed me videos of a few assessments recently conducted with children at the clinic so that I could gain an idea of what the assessment sessions looked like and what they may focus on.
From there, they set me up at a computer to have a read of the assessment reports written this year to gain an understanding of what these reports looked like and how they were written. I took notes on what I may want to include in my phone interviews and tried to read the reports from a parent's point of view. I found this to be really interesting, particularly as the writing style changed from about the middle of September this year. I noticed that previously the reports were written only in paragraphs under the headings of areas the assessments were looking at, and then they began to incorporate tables instead. This is definitely something I may want tot ask parents about because they may find one style of writing easier to read/follow than another.
At approximately 12pm, Jodie and I headed down to the lunch, and then we listened to a number of presentations for the conference. Again, this was very interesting to me and I enjoyed hearing about studies which are currently underway in the occupational therapy profession.
MONDAY 25th NOVEMBER
Today I finished with you my OH&S Induction checklist and put it in Mary Ann's mailbox. I will be taking leave as of tomorrow, and will begin working again on the morning of Tuesday 4th December.
Thank you so much for inviting me to join this research team and I am very much looking forward to beginning work next week!
Kelly
Many thanks for the update. I responded to your report by using a new post. You can also add your future report in the format of new posts. The function is located at the right-hand side and next to Log Out function.
Hope you have a good time in Melbourne. We will see you next week.
WILL
